If you’re experiencing problems with your windows or doors, Sapphire Windows & Doors is here to help. We manufacture and install quality replacement windows and fit a wide range of doors, helping homeowners across South and West Wales improve their home’s comfort, energy efficiency and appearance.

Whether you’re dealing with misted glass, draughts, leaking frames or rising heating bills, our experienced team can assess your existing windows and doors and explain the options available.

Is condensation on double-glazed windows normal?

Yes, some condensation is perfectly normal. Condensation on the outside of your windows can occur when the outer glass is colder than the surrounding air. Condensation on the inside can result from excess humidity in your home, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Neither automatically means your windows are faulty.

However, condensation trapped between the two panes of glass usually indicates that the sealed double-glazed unit has failed and may need replacing.

At Sapphire, we can assess your windows, help identify the likely cause and explain whether replacing the glass unit or upgrading your windows would be the most suitable option. You don’t always need to replace the entire window.

Misted Double Glazing: Your Questions Answered

Noticed condensation between your window panes? Find out what causes misted double glazing, whether the glass can be replaced and when upgrading your complete windows might be worth considering.

Misted double glazing showing condensation trapped between the glass panes

Moisture trapped between the panes can leave double glazing looking cloudy, even when the weather is bright and sunny.

1. Why does double glazing mist up between the panes?

Double glazed windows contain two panes of glass separated by a sealed cavity. Over time, the seal around the unit can deteriorate, allowing moisture to enter.

This moisture can cause condensation, misting and a cloudy appearance that cannot usually be wiped away from either side of the glass.

2. Is condensation on windows always a sign of a problem?

No. Some condensation is completely normal. Condensation can form on the inside of your windows when warm, moist indoor air meets a colder glass surface. It can also appear on the outside of energy-efficient glazing in certain weather conditions.

These types of surface condensation are different from moisture trapped between the panes. If you can see mist or droplets inside the sealed cavity, the sealed unit may have failed.

3. How can I tell if my double glazed unit has failed?

Persistent misting, cloudy patches or droplets that appear to sit between the panes are common signs of a failed or deteriorating seal.

If the moisture cannot be wiped away from either glass surface, it is worth having the window assessed to establish the likely cause.

4. Can misted double glazed units be replaced?

Often, yes. If your existing window frames are in good condition, replacing the failed sealed glass unit can restore a much clearer view without replacing the entire window.

The suitability of this option depends on the condition, age and construction of your existing windows.

5. Will replacing the glass make my windows more energy efficient?

A replacement sealed unit may restore the insulating performance of the glazing, depending on its specification and the condition of the window.

However, it will not upgrade the existing frame, hinges, locks or other hardware. If your windows are older, a complete replacement may offer broader improvements in insulation, operation and security.

6. Should I replace the glass or the complete window?

If your frames are sound and your windows operate properly, replacing the sealed units may be a sensible option.

If the frames are deteriorating, the hinges or locks are unreliable, or you are experiencing draughts, it may be worth comparing the cost of new windows with the cost of repairing the existing ones.

The best choice depends on your home, your budget and the condition of your current windows.

7. Can Sapphire help with misted double glazing in South Wales?

Yes. Sapphire Windows & Doors can assess your existing windows and explain the options available, whether you are considering replacement sealed units or upgrading to new windows.
